Five Great Tastes of Summer
July is the time to get outdoors, whether it’s for a day at the beach or biking and hiking across the moors. Here are our favorites to pack in your snack bag.
The Sconset Market’s Blueberry Muffins
Hands down these are the best blueberry muffins around, just like your grandmother or maybe you used to make. Light, sweet with plenty of juicy blueberries there’s a reason these sell out every day by 9:30 or so.
Sconset Market, Post Office Square, Sconset. 508-257-9915. Open seasonally, May to early October.
Something Natural’s Chocolate Chip Cookies
Don’t kid yourself into thinking you’re eating just one cookie here. These are monstrous, and probably equate to 4 or 5 regular-size cookies. Best eaten warm, shortly after they’ve been taken from the oven, they are soft and gooey and taste of brown sugar.
Something Natural, 50 Cliff Rd., 508-228-0504. Open seasonally May to early October.
The Downyflake’s Scotch Irish Cake
A Nantucket tradition, this oatmeal spice cake is covered with something akin to the coconut-pecan frosting on German Chocolate cake and then run under a broiler to lightly caramelize. Have this as a morning snack with a cup of coffee, or buy several squares to serve for dinner with some lightly sweetened whipped cream.
The Downyflake, 18 Sparks Ave., 508-228-4533. Open year round, closed in March, early April.
Daily Breads’ Raspberry Raviolis
Baker Liz Holland’s newest creation is a tender square or half-moon of sugar-coated pastry wrapped around a filling of raspberry jam, then pressed into a ravioli form. Very yummy.
Daily Breads, 147 Lower Orange, 508-228-8961.
Nantucket Bake Shop’s Sconset Sweets
Don’t wear black when you eat these or you’ll find yourself dusted with a shower of confectioner’s sugar, as that’s what covers this cream cheese pastry wrapped around a filling of fruit and nuts. Think super tender rugelach, and that’s what you’ve got.
Nantucket Bake Shop, 79 Orange, 508-228-2797.
