Portrait of an Artist: Sherre Wilson Rae

Story and Photo by Terry Pommett

It is unusual that one of Nantucket’s most recognizable artists rarely paints Nantucket at all.

Nevertheless, Sherre Wilson Rae relies on the island’s calm strength as a fundamental source of inspiration. Much of her work conveys that feeling of connectedness. It leaves the viewer with an impression of somehow belonging here, regardless of the subject matter.

“Most artists need to feel comfortable and quiet in their environment,” she says. “For me, it’s all about finding a sense of order. I don’t paint Nantucket very often. To be honest, the landscape and architecture don’t move me. But being in a place I love gives me a chance to focus on my work, to let the creative process flow.”
