Publisher's Note

The island breathes a sigh of relief after Labor Day. The manic pace of August is behind us. The hot and muggy weather is gone (usually). Main Street and its throngs of people have emptied out and there is finally time to relax in one of the most beautiful places on the East Coast.

While you’re outside, you might take an interest in getting your spring bulbs started. Bartlett’s Farm grower and Nantucket Today writer Hilary Newell has a piece in this month’s issue that gives you all the advice you need to get your spring bulbs started.

Fall is also a good time to retire your grill and get back in the kitchen. Two of the island’s top cooks, Sarah Chase and Susan Simon, have articles and recipes in this issue of Nantucket Today that are tempting me now, even in the heat of August. Sarah, a weekly columnist for The Inquirer and Mirror and noted cookbook author, has come up with three great meals that speak of comfort food. “Soup ’n Sandwich” gives recipes for a delicious Maine crab roll paired with corn and clam chowder, a butternut squash and cider bisque paired with a yummy-sounding sandwich of melted brie, cranberries, almonds and brown sugar, and a tomato soup with “sandwiches” made of salami and cheese in between two rounds of fried eggplant.

Susan, who is great friends with Ron and Colleen Suhanosky of Sfoglia, writes about her adventures in creating a cookbook, “Pasta Sfoglia.” There were weeks of transforming restaurant recipes for the home cook, and weeks of cooking, tasting and testing. At the end she gives us six of the recipes, hand-picked by Ron, that speak to the flavors of fall.

While many people turn to outdoor activities in the fall, a few stay indoors at the gym and the rink at Nantucket Ice. This month former Olympic gold medalist Dorothy Hamill is holding her Fantasy Figure Skating Camp on the island at Nantucket Ice. Hamill, one of the most popular former Olympians, has settled on Nantucket with her financé from summer through early fall. Inquirer and Mirror sports editor Allison Goldsmith and photographer Jim Powers caught up with Hamill to talk to her about life after the Olympics, beating depression and cancer, and what she is doing now.

We hope you enjoy this fall issue of our magazine, and that we have glorious weather in September and October to make up for the dismal June.
